My day with Tweakers.net to talk about BenQ monitors
As you may or may not know, I’m sponsored by BenQ and sometimes they ask me to speak on their behalve. This time I spent a day at the Tweakers.net Testfest event in Amsterdam.
The Tweakers Testfest event is for the members of the Tweakers.net website, who is prodominantly focussed on testing technical apparatuses like graphic cards, CPU’s and also monitors.
During the event I talked about the importance of calibrating your monitor and the benefits of working with a monitor manufactored by BenQ. BenQ has hardware calibration support, which is a little rare in the monitor market. This means that with a X-Rite i1 Display Pro or a Datacolor Spyder you can calibrate your monitor like you normally would, but instead of using the X-Rite or Datacolor software you use the BenQ Palette Master software to be able to write the color profile directly into the monitor.
There’s some advantages of doing this: One is the option to connect whatever device you want to the monitor and have the reliability of display of correct colors. Second, there’s no software involvement. Whenever your graphic cards driver updates, there's a chance of your color profile getting either corrupt or adapted. Which isn’t good if you have no idea it happened.
I’ve seen this in the past, when a driver messed up a calibration on a computer and the photographer didn’t notice the color shift. That’s where hardware calibration comes into play, because you can exclude everything from the equation as far as peripheral devices go.
Either way, I created a little ‘behind the scenes’ video when I worked at the Tweakers.net October Testfest event in Amsterdam.
